The Single Girl Diaries | Rush-Hour Crush

Hello Lovelies! Recently I've been preoccupied with the thought of bringing my duvet on the commute with me. Like seriously, to tired me at 7.45am there is no sweeter thought then rushing back to my beloved duvet, hugging it dearly and returning to the land of the sleeping. Alas though, a girl got to get to Uni even if that means being squished by a pack of sweaty commuters. And yes, it really is as attractive as it sounds.

Personal space is just not a thing on the tube. People will push you, elbow you and there will always be that person who pushes themselves into the carriage even when there's not a centimetre of space left and dangerously low levels of oxygen. And as commuter luck will have it, you never seem to get squished next to an attractive person. THIS HAS NOT HAPPENED ONCE. Usually you're just standing there wanting to engage your inner Cher and push the person away, when in reality you end up politely trying to regain your personal space bubble whilst maintaining some sense of tube etiquette.

As any commuter will know, one of the most awkward things about being on the tube is eye contact. There have been countless times where I've picked up an Evening Standard or Metro newspaper just so I can hide behind it because awkward eye contact is just the worst. That said though, there are times on occasion where you lock eyes with a stranger and you're convinced they could be your long lost love - my mind jumps like that (see thought of the day). But hey a girl's got to be principled with engaging eye contact. If I see a wedding ring, my eyes will be averted right way. Ain't got no time for no scandalous eye contact.

But when I do catch a stranger's eye, it usually gets pretty intense, and by that I mean I awkwardly glance at them a couple of times because really I can't maintain eye contact for more than two seconds.  Even though I fail at that, you still get the guys who stare at you for a ridiculously long time who you are convinced have just fallen in love with you at first sight, well, that is until you realise that they're not actually looking at you... The truth is a lot of guys seem to have the most intense rested faces ever, like full on Edward Cullen glares that pierce your soul. But more often then not they're blankly staring into the distance, admiring that ceiling above your head because when you're commuting anything except people's faces suddenly becomes the most intriguing thing to look at. E.g oh what an interesting tube map, totally haven't seen that before, even though I take this line every day... (This is me every morning).

*Side note I miss when I thought Twilight was a cute romance. But no it's actually super creepy. Ah Growing up...

Anyway, one of the funniest things about tube travel is the Rush Hour Crush column in the Metro - it's hilarious. If you have no idea what Rush-hour crush is, take a look at this list of creepy ones courtesy of Buzzfeed. You're totally welcome. Whenever I read it, my brain always seems to trick me into thinking I could the girl who's being described, because you know I'm just simply irresistible and all that (and totally not delusional).

Like honestly even when the details are super specific, I'm still like hmm... could be me. Even when the person says the girl travels on a certain line that I've never travelled on before in my life, I still think hmm.. maybe he got the detail wrong. Vicky Logic everyone.

But apparently jokes aside, Rush hour crush has been successful for one couple, with them meeting through the column, falling in love and a proposal on the tube platform they met, aww. So maybe it's not such a joke after all. Although that said I could never see myself actually sending in my rush hour crush because 1) I'm not that desperate yet 2) I'd die of awkwardness. But if I did, I reckon it would look something like this:

To the guy staring at me on the tube - were you actually looking at me or did you accidentally catch my eye? If the first is true, and you are currently unattached let's go for a Starbucks some time. If the latter is true then don't mind me, I'll be changing my travel arrangements, possibly moving to Manchester and dying of embarrassment. Happy Commuting...

You think I'm joking, but I really am that awkward. *hides under a rock*

But the question you're probably all asking is, does Vicky have a rush-hour crush?

And the answer is, yes, on a fellow Northern Line commuter (hi, you).

But unfortunately who my friends, is a secret you'll have to find out in another page of my diary.

(I know, I'm evil.)

Thought of the Day: 'A lady's imagination is very rapid; it jumps from admiration to love, from love to matrimony in a moment.' - Jane Austen

Man Crush: David Tennant, always. My childhood crush was him as Doctor Who, and I've never quite gotten over it.

Perk of being single: All the eye contact with strangers your heart desires which is almost as good as being in a relationship. Almost...

Thank you for reading lovelies! Join me next Sunday, 12PM GMT for the next page in my diary!

P.S Next Sunday is Valentine's which I'm sure you all know by now. Fun fact - I've never actually received anything on Valentine's, not even a card - so this year I'll probably buy myself pity chocolates, snuggle under my duvet and watch a rom com like every other year. Maybe I'll even go see Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, so romantic I know! So if you're in the same boat this dreaded V day - you know you're not entirely alone.

  2. Love this post!! I get this all the time in my uni library - when you make eye contact with someone for too long. Alas, no one has confessed their undying love for me yet.
Also, totally agree on the Twilight thing - it's just plain creepy.

  8. Hahaha 'scandalous eye contact'! I totally get that! Maybe because I don't go on the tube as often, but I'm the one purposely making eye contact with everyone because I think I'm funny XD And that rush hour crush is my new favourite column omg

  9. As usual, I LOVE this post!! I've recently started getting the train to uni so I felt like I could relate and I laughed at the awkward eye contacts, the feeling of not having enough oxygen, been squished up to so many people (that Cher gif is life) I look forward to hearing more about this commuter crush ;) And I love David Tennant, I fancied him in Doctor Who too haha!! xx
