Ask The Bloggers #2 Have You Told Your Friends/Family About Your Blog?

Hello Lovelies! Call it the Summer holiday effect, but when it comes to blogging I get so unorganised and lazy as soon as it's Summer. This post was meant to go up a while ago, but I somehow completely forgot about it because holiday me is a little too laid back - so sorry about that! If you missed the first post, Ask The Bloggers is a series that hopes to bring the blogging community a little bit closer together by asking questions and talking about topics all related to the highs and lows of being a blogger, as well as some great advice too! This time I asked some lovely bloggers whether or not they'd told their friends and family about their blog. A lot of us are willing to share our blog posts with the whole world, but when it comes to our friends and family it can be a completely different story...

Joining us today we have Aftab, who is as Fresh and Fearless as his blog name would suggest, Tamzin who is one of the lovely co hosts of the gbloggers twitter chat (Friday 7-8pm), the amazing and wonderfully creative Jemma from dorkface.co.uk, and my two lovely blogging friends Rachel who just hit two years of blogging (whoop!) and Shireen who is the queen of straight-talking and honest beauty reviews.

Aftab's Answer:

My parents, family and friends are all aware of Fresh And Fearless. I’m genuinely lucky to have supporting parents who are always interested in what’s going on with my blog. They are the first people I text/call when I get some exciting opportunities pop through into my inbox. My friends follow my blog through my Facebook page and through my personal Facebook - it helps to have extra support and them willing to put up with my mass photo sprees when we are out at dinner together. Whenever I meet somebody new and they ask about what I do and get to know me as a person, I always include the fact that I’m a blogger. It is something that I am super proud of and that makes up a part of me. Most people that I have told are intrigued about it and always ask for my URL to take a look later on. My parents were a bit skeptical to begin with, as they thought it would be another of my phase hobbies that I would soon give up, but I kept at it. Now that Fresh and Fearless has become something special, they do take it more seriously and I am extremely grateful for it.

To people who haven’t told their parents or friends about their blog, I think you should. There is nothing to be ashamed of, in fact you should be proud of what you do. Especially, if you’re willing to let your posts loose for all the internet to see, telling your loved ones should not really be something to be worried about

Rachel's Answer:

My family and most of my friends do know about my blog but I don't actually let my family read it because I find the thought of people reading my writing SO embarrassing! The only reason my friends actually do read my blog is because they were sneaky and managed to find it online! If they hadn't found it, then there's no way I would have actually told them about it! I get quite wary of people that I know from school (those people you know but you're not actually friends with) finding my blog so I'm actually quite secretive about it and I don't ever post links on Twitter/instagram! I really want to try and get over this embarrassment as it would probably benefit my blog a lot if I actually advertised it on all of my social media platforms!

Shireen's Answer:

Uhmm... sort of. Only a couple of my friends know that I'm a blogger and while my family is aware that I blog, they are completely in the dark on what's the name of my blog or what I blog about. It's not that I'm embarrassed about my blog on the contrary, I am very proud of it but my family is quite traditional and they don't understand how huge and important the blogging world has become. Heck they don't even really know how to use a computer!

I'm slowly getting used to identifying myself as a beauty blogger and have been more open about it but I'm still very far away from being comfortable introducing myself as one. It's a slow process but I will eventually get there!

Jemma's Answer:

My friends and family both know about my blog, but I never actively told them really. I set up a Facebook page and invited them to it, where I regularly share updates and links to my blog. I started chatting about it casually, without a big 'reveal moment.' Just like, 'Oh, it's for my blog anyway..' - I was never really bothered about them knowing or not! My friends have all supported me in loads of different ways and told me how great I'm doing which is so nice! My family don't really get it, but they're happy I've found something that makes me happy :)

Tamzin's Answer:

My friends and family know about my blog but I don't speak to them about it. I don't think they know how much effort goes into it to understand how it all works. I don't know why I always seem embarrassed to talk about it or if anyone brings it up! Some of my friends read my blog and it always makes me smile if they say they liked it but I think I would be embarrassed if anyone I didn't know found out about it. It's like my own little escape and I quite like keeping it more personal to myself and trying to tell others about it :)

My Answer:

I can't really remember how or when my friends and family found out about my blog but they knew about it very early on as I never really made an effort to keep it a secret. I've had a lot of friends tell me they read my posts, and even one of my friend's boyfriends had a look at my blog too and told me he liked it (someone was obviously trying to win points!) so I'm really thankful to have friends that not only accept I'm a blogger but show an interest too. As far as my family is concerned, they sometimes visit my blog. My sister reads my Monday posts - which is really sweet of her and occasionally my parents take a look too. A good example is when it was Christmas and they all looked at my 100 gifts under £10 post, and discussed it at Dinner which was both cute but terribly embarrassing.

Although I'm happy sharing my blog with close friends and family, it does still for some reason feel a little daunting even though I'm used to sharing my blog with the world. I haven't got to the point where I can proudly introduce myself as or say I'm a blogger to people I know, but it's something, like Shireen, that I'm working on.

Thank you for reading lovelies! If you'd like to get involved in the next post do get in touch as I'll be on the lookout for more bloggers to get involved! Also if you have any suggestions for a question to ask next time, let me know in the comment section below!

  1. I'd love to be involved in the next one, and to be honest I'm very open about my blog with my close friends and family. So much so that my mum has my blog bookmarked on her tablet! haha

  2. My answer is similar to Rachel and Shireen's; people are aware of my blog and the sort of things I do for it, but I don't let anyone know the name and would find the thought quite painful if they ever managed to find it! Also I really like the idea of this as a series - I'd be happy to be involved :)

  3. That is such an amazing post! :)
It's a "sort of" answer for me. Family knows but they wouldn't be following or anything like that (well, they might lol), and some friends know but not everyone I guess. It's strange how sometimes friends might be the ones "judging" you a bit. Sadly.
I am gladly sharing with those I know who would care :)
Main thing is my husband reads and checks it a few times a day - means the world to me! :)

  4. This is such a lovely idea. I'm pretty similar to a few above.. my friends & family know about my blog, but it's not something that I speak to them about too much. Not because I'm embarrassed but because it almost makes me feel a little shy.. The one person who I speak about my blog to regularly is my boyfriend (& that's probably because we live together so he always sees me taking photos etc).

I'd love for my little blog to be involve in something like this :)

    1. Haha yeah I can imagine, I would have found it so hard to hide my blog from my family now because I'm just always taking photos or doing blogg-y things x And will definitely try and remember to get in touch with you about the next one!

  5. I don't actively tell people that I blog, but I do mention it on my instagram and twitter, so I don't hide it either.. If people find out about it that's cool with me.

  7. I started to share photos on instagram, at first it was scary but I realised that no-one actually cares that much. My closest friends have been really supportive and I've had alot of compliments recently, so I really appreciate the support and am glad I didn't keep it a dirty little secret!

  9. I love this post!
My dad was the first to find about my blog as he had me on google+, I had no idea he knew until a few months into it! But he's so supportive of it, and so are the rest of my family :)
My friends don't really know though as none of them really understand makeup!

  10. This is such a great segment! I only recently started telling people about my blog, I've always been quite embarrassed previous... I'm not sure why, especially when I was on Youtube, I kept it hidden from all my friends and family. My partner, parents and friends are all super supportive of my blogging now :)

  11. What a great post! The only person who knows about my blog is my boyfriend! I feel like telling my family sometimes but I don't think they'd really understand it and might -unintentionally- make me feel a little embarrassed by writing it.

  12. I love this post idea and the question is a gooden!
My Mum and her partner know that I blog, but don't really know what it's about. My boyfriend knows all about it and my quite a few of my work colleagues/friends know about it too, mainly due to following me on Instagram/Twitter and seeing me promote posts. I don't mind people knowing it's just a lot of people don't get it and trying to explain it makes me feel awkward and embarrassed!
