Call Me Caitlyn

Hello Lovelies! Unless you've been living under a rock then you'll already know about Caitlyn Jenner and her Vanity Fair cover. Yesterday my twitter feed was absolutely flooded with people congratulating her, and praising her for how gorgeous she looks (because let's face it, she's a stunner at 65!).

But on a much more serious note, seeing the incredibly positive way that most people responded to her transition made me pretty emotional, and I did end up in an absolute flood of happy tears.

Personally one of my best friends transitioned into being a boy, and I cannot put into words how proud I felt. It takes so much bravery to tell people you're transgender - and it's so wonderful when they actually transition and feel finally comfortable with themselves. It also inspires people even on that scale, and so many people I know, because of my friend, came out as being gay or bisexual so I can't imagine the impact that Caitlyn's transition will have. It's also hard undoubtedly, because not everyone is so accepting or unintentionally people will say things that they don't realise are offensive. An example of this is when people ask if they've had the full surgery 'down there' which is obviously a really embarrassing question, especially when you don't know the person! But unfortunately that question gets asked a lot, when it doesn't need to be. For me however, I wasn't personally affected by his transition, as I didn't care what gender my friend was, as long as he was happy. I remember talking to him after he told me he was transitioning, and we went to a cafe, and talked about how exciting it was that he would go on testosterone soon, and all things he could do now as a boy. My only worry was protecting my friend, as I was scared more than anything that people would judge him, or he'd be hurt which sadly did happen quite a few times.

The only sad thing about Bruce Jenner becoming Caitlyn Jenner, is that she couldn't do it sooner. That's why I hope her transition inspires people to be who they really are as soon as they can. This isn't even just a gender thing, because I think sometimes we all hold back pieces of ourselves because we're afraid of being judged. At the end of the day we only have one life, and we should live it being completely ourselves, not being what society tells us we ought to be. That said, we still have a long way to go in terms of LGBT rights, especially trans rights. There are still transgender people who won't be accepted by their families or their friends, just as there are gay or bisexual people who will be killed for their sexuality or forced into living a lie. I just hope that when I have children, they can grow up in a world where no one cares who you love, and you can be the gender you feel that you are. Just remember the power that you have. Being accepting, and loving people for whoever they are is one of the most powerful things in the world, so never underestimate the impact of your voice.

Welcome to the world Caitlyn Jenner.

  7. I think the fact that she got the cover is really a great sign for the world.
Ireland just voted in Yes for the Gay Marriage Equality referendum.
I think finally people who have been seen as minorities (although there are more LGBTs than you'd expect) are finally being recognised.

    1. Yeah it's very symbolic that she made the cover. And yes I know, I was so happy when I heard the news that there was a yes majority in Ireland :)

  8. She is so beautiful. I've actually not seen a lot of negativity towards her, which makes me so happy. It must be such a relief for her that she can finally openly be who she is, and I'm so happy for Caitlyn!

I saw something brilliant on Facebook that was along the lines of 'Some people are refusing to call Caitlyn by her female name as she was born 'Bruce'. I was 8lbs when I was born but please don't buy me newborn clothes as they won't fit anymore. It's the same with Caitlyn'.

(I haven't articulated that in a brilliant way but I hope it still makes sense haha)
