Review: Rimmel London Keep Calm Lip Balms VS Maybelline Baby Lips

You might have noticed that Rimmel's Keep Calm Lip Balms look suspiciously similar to Maybelline's Baby Lips Lip balms, especially as they can be bought for the exact same price (£2.99), so I thought I'd review both of them to see which one I liked best. I've already reviewed Baby Lips (here) but I'll tell you what I think of them again.

One of the main differences between these two lip balms, is their shape. Baby Lips is flat whilst Rimmel have chosen to go for a lipstick shape. Application wise I prefer the shape of the Keep Calm balms but I think that's just a matter of personal preference.

I tried out two of each of the set of lip balms, from Baby Lips I tried Mint Fresh which is clear and Pink Punch which has a tint. Then from Rimmel I tried two of the tinted balms: Berry Blush and Rose Blush.

All four of the lip balms have a very waxy feel that I'm not a big fan of, as it feels like for me that my lips aren't really being moisturised at all. Like I said in my review of Baby Lips, I found that compared to other balms it didn't really do a good job at all. However Baby Lips and Rimmel London have a strong smell. Personally I think Baby Lips Mint Fresh and Pink Punch smell nice, but Rimmel's Keep Calm lip balms smell a bit too generic and fake. My boyfriend really hated the smell of both Rose Blush and Berry Blush, so I think it might just be personal preference.

Both Baby Lips and Keep Calm Lip Balms are tinted (except the clear ones), so the colour is very sheen and subtle. Like I've said before, I've found Baby Lips Pink Punch to be quite streaky on the lips, but you can build it up more to make it look better. Rimmel's Keep Calm and Rock balm has quite a good colour, whilst Rose Blush is not very noticeable. The colour does not last very long on either products, so you do have to keep applying it.

Overall I wouldn't buy either of these products again as personally neither of the products work well for me. But if you want a lip balm to use at school for example, it's not too pricey and is good if you want to add a slight colour to your lips. Plus the packaging is really fun! If I had to choose between the two, I'd go for Baby Lips because I prefer the smell but they are incredibly similar.

What do you think? Have you tried either of these products? Tell me in the comment section below! Have a great day lovelies!

  2. Great review, I might give Rimmel ones a try because I hated Maybelline Baby Lips, it made my lips so dry. :-(

    1. I wouldn't recommend the Rimmel ones if Baby Lips didn't work for you, they feel very similar and both don't moisturise well for me either!

  4. I have similar thoughts to you, I haven't tried the Rimmel ones, but I've tried baby lips and find them a over hyped product. xx

    1. They are very over hyped, although I do think they work better for some people than others x

  5. Lovely review! I definitely did notice the similarity between the new Rimmel balms and the Maybelline's. I actually use Baby Lips everyday but the 'Cherry Me' shade as I love the sheen red/dark pink colour it gives, and I do find it does the job just fine. Saying that, I'm not too fond of the other shades, and especially the one you reviewed 'Pink Punch', I found it a really Barbie pink that didn't look nice on me at all! But I know many people also really dislike Baby Lips and feel it's overhyped, so I suppose it's each to their own. I don't think I'll be trying the Keep Calm balms though, far too gimmicky for my liking and not fab reviews either. As I said though, a lovely review! Charlie xx

    1. Thanks, I've heard that Pink Punch is definitely one of the weaker ones. But like you say I think it works better for some than others. I was so disappointed when I first tried Baby Lips because I had such high expectations. The Keep Calm balms aren't really worth trying as they are SO similar. Glad you liked the review x

  8. Wow! I'd never heard of Rimmel London Keep Calm lip balms, or seen them. They do indeed look like a copy of baby lips. I think I'll definitely stick to Maybelline's baby lips...

    1. I'm pretty sure Rimmel just completely copied Baby Lips as they are so incredibly similar!

  9. The whole "keep calm" trend has become annoying enough to me that I refused to buy those on principle. I've tried the babylips ones though, and I totally agree with you - really waxy and they'd just sit there on top of my lips without really doing anything helpful! Really good review by the way - your product reviews are always so in-depth.

    1. I agree, the whole 'Keep Calm' thing is a bit too overused. I guess it must work for other people, but I find that it feels so dry on my lips. Thank you :)

  10. Even if it is cheap, I definitely would not go out of my way to buy it again if I'm honest. And I know it's so crazy.

  13. Hey! Great review!

Quick question, is it possible to interchange the two packaging? Like have the cap of the Rimmels lip balm on the baby lips base, etc? thanks :)
