Project Runway Season 13, Episode 4 'Remixing an American Classic' Recap

This week the contestants had to make high fashion outfits out of the material from old men's suits (they could also use fabric from Mood). The twist was that Sandhya who had immunity was chosen to pick her suit first and also had the benefit of choosing a suit for each of the contestants. Predictably, there was a lot of complaining and accusations that Sandhya had purposely chosen bad suits. But eventually most of the contestants got used to their fabrics and adapted them to suit their designs. On the judging panel, the judges were joined by Bethany Mota. Here's what I thought of the designs:

Alexander (Top Three)

I liked Alexander's look, it was very classic but modern at the same time. The only thing I will say is that the top and the skirt feel a little disconnected to me but it is a great look.

Char (Safe)

There was too much going on in Char's look. The slit on the skirt is too short and it feels like this skirt would rise up horribly. I quite like the skirt detail, but that and the neck detail is too much. If I was her I would have kept the bow detail, and made the top half simple. I like where she was trying to go with this outfit but I don't think she achieved it.

Amanda (Winner)

Amanda made a really good use of the fabrics she had - I like how she added fringe, although we have seen this from her before. I don't think it was strong enough to win but she did a good job.

Fade (Safe)

I'm not sure what it is about this design but I really like it. Fade is just very good at mixing prints together and I love how sophisticated this look is. I predict he'll be in the top three soon.

Hernan (Out)

There was a lot wrong with Hernan's dress. Fabric wise he made his life harder by choosing a vinyl fabric that was very hard to work with. The length of the dress is strange, and the hem is uneven. The details in vinyl were also unfortunate, with the judges commenting on the unfortunate 'V' at the front. I think it was Hernan's time to go, especially as his attitude was so negative throughout the whole challenge. He spent way too much time complaining about the suit Sandhya chose him and not enough time considering his design.

Kini (Top Three)

I thought Kini's dress was fabulous, so structured and chic. I love the hardness of the shoulders and how that echoes the suit before. I do think that the pockets on the back looked a bit weird though, and the design wasn't so original but the tailoring was brilliant.

Korina (Safe)

I didn't really like or dislike Korina's outfit - it seems quite dull to me. I like the way she used the red but the skirt seemed too long and the jacket felt a little safe. I'm waiting to see something a little more interesting from Korina as she always seems to play things quite safe.

Kristine (Bottom Three)

I was really disappointed that this didn't turn out better - there were just too many ideas. The organza at the bottom of the pants seemed unnecessary especially as their fit turned out so loose. The crotch on the pants also looked very odd. However I liked the biker jacket, I thought it was cool how she had open shoulders on it. It's just a shame this didn't turn out better.

Mitchell (Safe)

Mitchell's looks always seem to be a bit out of this world - I can't imagine many girls wearing something that looks so plastic-y. That said I do like the look he created with the overlapping of fabric. Not really sure whether I like Mitchell as a designer or not yet.

Samantha (Safe)

With Samantha's outfit, I feel like it looks a lot better in person when you can really see the details. I like the mixture of the structured suit shape and a more delicate look on the other side. This dress does feel a little safe but the details look from what I can see very beautiful. Not so sure about the safety pins though.

Sandhya (Safe)

I'm not really sure what I think of Sandhya's look. I love the top detail, the fading black effect looks great with a pop of yellow and the moustache adds a fun top. Skirt wise it looks a little messy. However, with Sandhya I always feel like she does something creative and risy, and I love that. She could do with refining her designs a little though.

Emily (Safe)

At a glance I liked this but when you really look at it, it's very out of proportion just like Jefferson's outfit that sent him home in episode one. I just don't understand this look at all.

Hope you liked reading my thoughts, tell me below what your favourite outfit is!

  3. Kini's dress is gorgeous, so much better than Amanda's! Think a close second favourite of mine is Fade's though, not usually one for mixed patterns but they compliment each other so well
