In Reaction To Zoella: 'Sometimes It All Gets A Bit Too Much'

I saw the video below, 'Sometimes It All Gets Too Much' on Zoella's MoreZoella youtube channel just a couple of days ago, where Zoe expressed that she wanted to do a truthful vlog and show how she was really feeling that day rather than what she wanted us to see. Disappointingly, the reaction to the video was on the whole negative - with the top comments telling Zoe how easy her life is and that she's an awful person for getting upset when she has it 'all'.

The sad reality is that I wasn't really surprised by this reaction - as we see this on the internet all too often. The problem is that we idolise celebrities and famous youtubers to the point where we stop seeing them as human beings. They feel so distant from reality, that we can easily scrutinise them without feeling like we've hurt them in any way.

Zoe might have what people consider the 'perfect life', a boyfriend, millions of fans, money, good looks etc... but the reality is that no one's life is perfect as she says in her video, and no one really is perfect. One of the most common arguments on the video is the whole argument of 'Children are starving in Africa, so Zoe doesn't have the right to be sad.' I've never agreed with this argument because I believe that sadness is relative to the situation you're in. Just because you have a privileged life doesn't mean you can't be sad - they aren't mutually exclusive things. Everyone gets sad, everyone gets overwhelmed or stressed out, they're human emotions that everyone experiences.

Getting sad when you have a good life, does by no means make you spoilt or underserving of the life you have. It makes you normal. And when I watched this video, what I loved is how human and genuine she seemed. I saw some of myself in her and it was comforting to know that someone has those days too when they get overwhelmed and have a good cry.

Honestly Zoella posting a video like this should be applauded because it doesn't sugar coat her life. It's a hard thing to show the world such an intimate moment, knowing that people will criticise you for it but it's a very brave thing.

Lastly, I think it's sad how little recognition that youtubers get for the amount of work they put into their videos and in Zoe's case her own blog. It's often seen as an easy job but in reality, a lot of effort time and creativity goes into making even one video. Anyone who has ever made a youtube video can tell you that.

Just remember we're all human, and no matter our situation or our lifestyle, we all get upset some times. It's what makes us human.

  1. Yeah I saw the video! It made me tear up a little, everyone deserves to have a little cry because it is really overwhelming. Because she has alot of things to deal with hate, her anxiety. Instead of people supporting her, they are just hating which is horrible and people do expect so much from her and its not right. Let her do what she wants! GREAT POST (thank you for letting me know, as its just so true!)

  2. I also saw this video, and I agree that Zoe should be applauded for bringing some realism to the whole thing: nobody has the perfect life and I find it just plain rude if people comment hate and give unnecessary/unjustified critique. Yes, Zoe is extremely lucky, but that is no reason for her to be constantly happy. I think it's when our examples show that they are human too that we probably idolise them most... I totally agree with everything you said, Vicky!

  3. I think you're totally right, I also like Zoella a lot and I have to admit I do wish sometimes that my life were similar to hers. Especially because there's no quality of life where I live, so whenever I see how others live in other countries, I tend to get a little jealous. But still, I would never think that any of those people doesn't have the right to feel bad or depressed, thinking that life gets hard sometimes, because everybody has their own problems and the things they've been through and it's not right to judge.
This is a really great post :)

    1. Thank you :) I think it's a natural thing to be jealous when people have things or a lifestyle that you'd want yourself. But I think it's a shame when people resent others who are successful because they don't have that lifestyle. Thanks for the comment :)

  4. I love Zoe. :3
    People are so incredibly insensitive.
she knows her fame is down to her youtube fan base and she has countless times thanked us.
We can see that she is so loyal to her fans by putting up all of these posts.
If she hadnt have posted we wouldnt know any better of the stress she is under.

    1. Yeah exactly. She always is thankful to her fans but people still call her selfish as if she puts no work into what she does. It's a shame, that people see youtubers in that way.

  5. 100% agree with you. Unfortunately there are just way too many insensitive idiots hiding behind their computers spewing hatred. I personally appreciate how brave she is showing her vulnerable side, not many are able to do that.

  6. I totally agree with this! I thought her video was commendable and although I'm not a famous rich youtuber or anything I could see how she felt and could sympathise because if truth be told we've all had days/moments like that. I thought it was commendable for her to put that video up and you're right it should be applauded! Great post to do this on! Abi :) myw0rldmyview.blogspot.co.uk

  9. I completely agree! I think it is very couragous of her and I think it is also what makes her a great modern time "real" role model- life is just not perfect, but we deal with it, we get over it. And it is okay.

  10. I agree with your post - I think she is very lucky to have the life she has but I do think that sadness is relative; even the Queen must feel sad sometimes.
