Curse of The Chipped Nail Polish: How to Avoid A Nail Nightmare

Painting your nails is a great way to freshen up a look or to make yourself feel good. However, I don't know about you but I find that I can only have perfect nails for at best five days before they start chipping - and it's not a good look.
My nails painted with Rimmel London's LYCRA. Pro 500 Peppermint - I LOVE this shade

If you've ever had to hide your chipped nails in shame, here are my tips on how to keep your nails looking amazing (some of them are obvious):

1) Buy a good nail varnish remover (not the cheapest!). The last thing you want is to have to scrape the nail varnish off your nails - I've been there and it's not good for your nails at all.

2) Try the messy method - Paint your nails quickly without trying to paint the whole of your nail, allowing the nail varnish to go on your fingers. Then wash your hands with a lot of soap, washing away the excess nail varnish on your fingers leaving you with perfect nails.

3) Let your nails grow but make sure they don't get too long! I'm a fan of the longer nail but it does get to a point where it can start looking a little scary and your nails start to break off. Using a nail file is also a great way to keep your nails looking neat.

4) Don't wait till your nail varnish starts chipping off. I'm a culprit of this - I tend to wait till my nails are in a state before painting them again. Nail varnish remover is your friend.

5) Try putting a clear layer of nail varnish over your existing layer or do a double layer of your current nail varnish. Don't apply too many layers, your nail polish may melt (happened to me once) or won't dry for a long time.

6) Use a Cuticle Cream to moisturise your nails and to stop damage. Burts Bees Lemon Cuticle Cream is a great one.

7) Don't paint your nails when you're about to do something else! I've done this so many times, due to impatience. Best time to paint your nails is when you're watching a film or listening to music - just don't touch anything when they're drying.

8) Buy good quality nail varnish. Personally I recommend Rimmel Nail Varnish as I've never had any problems with it.
